How Do We Meet?

We are all very busy, we have lives to live, things to do - it isn't always easy to get to lessons during the week.

So we asked ourselves, how could we make it easier, better and faster? Put your voice lesson in your pocket of course!

You will need to have access to youtube (either on a laptop or another device) the scales used in the lesson are on there. And our lesson will take place on the ZOOM platform.

You will be sent a link which opens up in ZOOM and it's as easy as pie to navigate.

What Will You Learn?

With my Vocal Students and my Choral Members, we learn breath techniques, vowel formation, styling, technique and more. Once we have done with the first 4 weeks' Scales, We use a song of our choice as our 'everything' for working out our voice.

I use scales to break down the passagio as well as secret exercises, it is fascinating - and you see the benefits immediately. Scales are used for ear training mainly, they are also good for vocal conditioning. I will give you scales to use (youtube) so that you can carry on working your voice away from class time.

My own experience in other styles of vocal coaching adds a flexible edge to the lessons. Bel Canto is deeper than just the words and breath... it's the heart of the song: The Where, When, Why, Whom and How.

We focus on:

Understanding our music and conveying a message.

Using and understanding Coloratura (Colourful singing)

As well as, the main features of the bel canto style:

  1. Prosodic singing (use of accent and emphasis)

  2. Matching register and tonal quality of the voice to the emotional content of the words

  3. A highly articulated manner of phrasing based on the insertion of grammatical and rhetorical pauses

  4. A delivery varied by several types of legato and staccato

  5. Messa di voce as the principal source of expression (Domenico Corri called it the "soul of music" The Singer's Preceptor, 1810, vol. 1, p. 14)

  6. Frequent alteration of tempo through rhythmic rubato and the quickening and slowing of the overall time

  7. The introduction of a wide variety of graces and divisions into both arias and recitatives

  8. Gesture as a powerful tool for enhancing the effect of the vocal delivery

  9.  Vibrato primarily reserved for heightening the expression of certain words and for gracing longer notes.

And, the four pillars of Bel Canto:

  1. Mask of the Face

  2. Hold of the Breath

  3. Lift of the Throat

  4. Inhalation of the Voice
